UAE Extends Visa Amnesty Programme Until December 31, 2024

Originally launched on September 1, the programme was due to end on October 31, 2024.

The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security has announced an extension of the UAE’s visa amnesty programme, now set to continue for an additional two months, with the new deadline being December 31, 2024.

Originally launched on September 1, the programme was due to end on October 31, 2024. This initiative has seen thousands of residents take advantage of the opportunity to regularise their visa status, with government authorities waiving significant fines for overstayers.

Marking the 53rd Union Day

Maj-Gen Suhail Saeed Al Khaili, director general of the ICP, stated, “The extension of the amnesty period aligns with our celebration of the UAE’s 53rd Union Day, showcasing the nation’s humanitarian and civilised values.”

He added that the decision reflects the needs and aspirations of individuals seeking to either regularise their residency or leave the country.

Al Khaili highlighted the surge in applications leading up to the original deadline, indicating a strong desire among violators to rectify their status.

“This extension represents a final opportunity for those who have overstayed to resolve their issues without incurring additional fines or facing a re-entry ban,” he noted.

He emphasized the initiative’s humanitarian essence, aiming to assist violators in overcoming their challenges while safeguarding their rights and those of their families.

Increased Participation

Al Khaili reported a notable increase in individuals correcting their residency status. However, he reiterated that fines will be reinstated for anyone who continues to violate residency rules after the extension ends.

The ICP plans to ramp up inspection efforts and has previously indicated that violators may face deportation and inclusion on no-entry lists.

This is the fourth amnesty programme initiated by the UAE government since 2007. The previous programme in 2018, originally slated for 90 days, was also extended to allow more individuals to regularise their residency status or depart the country without penalties.

Residents can apply for the amnesty at any ICP centre across the UAE, through approved typing centres, or via online platforms.

What does Amnesty mean?

Amnesty is a governmental act of forgiveness or pardon, often granted to a group of people who have committed a political offense, such as participating in protests or dissenting against the government.

An amnesty typically results in immunity from prosecution or punishment for these offenses. It differs from a regular pardon, as it applies broadly to groups rather than individuals and usually aims to promote peace, reconciliation, or reintegration in society.
