New 45,000 km undersea cable promises 24 terabytes of bandwidth to improve internet performance.

Pakistan is set to experience a major improvement in internet speed and reliability with the installation of a new undersea internet cable.

The 2Africa cable, stretching an impressive 45,000 kilometers, will connect 46 locations across Africa, Europe, and the Middle East.

The system will utilize advanced SDM1 technology with a total capacity of 180 Tbps.

The first phase of the installation began on December 1, 2024, with the cable landing at Hawksbay, Karachi.

Once the cable is fully operational, Pakistan will benefit from an additional 24 terabytes of bandwidth, significantly improving internet speeds.

Currently, the country operates with only 8 terabytes of bandwidth from seven existing cables.

The 2Africa cable will address long-standing complaints of slow internet speeds and enhance connectivity, especially with platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram.

Syed also noted that four additional major internet lines, including support for 5G, are in the pipeline, which will further enhance connectivity and resolve bandwidth congestion.

“5G and fiber connectivity for mobile towers are essential to address congestion and improve our international links. With the additional cables planned, our capacity will nearly double,” he explained.

He called for legislation to ensure affordable and uninterrupted internet access, which he believes is a fundamental right.

Criticizing internet censorship, Bilawal pointed out the negative impact of hasty decisions by senior officials regarding internet shutdowns. “Such actions disproportionately affect the youth, and we must fight for our digital rights as part of our broader democratic rights,” he stated.

Bilawal pledged to introduce a Digital Rights Bill in the National Assembly to secure affordable, unrestricted internet access for all. “I will present a Digital Bill, written by us, for us. Share your suggestions with me on social media,” he said.

With these developments, Pakistan is on track to enhance its digital infrastructure, ensuring improved connectivity for years to come.
