Govt Pushes for Swift Enforcement of Plastic Bag Ban in Islamabad

The notification further urged all authorities to ensure strict adherence to these regulations.

The Ministry of Climate Change has called for urgent action to enforce the ban on plastic bags in Islamabad, as stated in a letter issued this Sunday.

The letter emphasized the need for federal ministries and related agencies to expedite the implementation of the ban.

The Ministry of Climate Change had initially imposed a complete ban on plastic bags in 2019, followed by the introduction of the Single-Use Plastic (Prohibition) Regulation 2023.

The notification further urged all authorities to ensure strict adherence to these regulations.

In line with the efforts, last month, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced plans for a crackdown on single-use plastics, according to The News.

The EPA Punjab has already implemented amendments to laws regulating single-use plastic bags, imposing fines ranging from Rs5,000 to Rs50,000, as well as penalties such as sealing businesses and confiscating goods.

Under the new laws, the manufacturing, storage, sale, and use of plastic bags under 75 microns will be completely prohibited.

Furthermore, the recent amendment to the Single-Use Plastic Production and Consumption Act 2023 establishes “District Plastic Management Committees” in each district, with the deputy commissioner overseeing these teams made up of officers from 12 departments.
