Gurdwara Chakki Sahib: A Testament to Sikh Faith and Heritage
Gurdwara chakki Sahib is linked to a remarkable episode involving Baba Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, and the Mughal emperor Zahir-ud-Din Babar.
Gujranwala, a city steeped in history, holds deep significance for the Sikh community. Among its revered sites is Gurdwara Chakki Sahib, located in Eminabad.
This sacred place is linked to a remarkable episode involving Baba Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, and the Mughal emperor Zahir-ud-Din Babar.
The Story of Baba Guru Nanak Imprisonment
Historical accounts recount that Emperor Babar, during his conquests, arrested Baba Guru Nanak and detained him in a prison that spanned several hundred acres. Over time, this expansive area has been reduced to just a few marlas due to encroachments by influential landlords.
In this prison, King Babar ordered Guru Nanak to grind corn using a chakki (millstone). However, according to Sikh religious books, Guru Nanak’s divine presence led to a miraculous event—when he began reciting prayers, the millstones started operating on their own without physical effort.
The Emperor’s Awe
The guards witnessing this extraordinary event immediately informed Emperor Babar. Intrigued, the emperor visited the prison himself. Upon seeing the miracle, he was profoundly moved and fell at Guru Nanak’s feet, seeking forgiveness for his actions.
Babar not only ordered Guru Nanak’s release but also granted freedom to 30,000 other prisoners who were detained alongside him. Guru Nanak had refused to leave the prison until his fellow detainees were freed, showcasing his unwavering compassion and commitment to justice.
Naming of Gurdwara Chakki Sahib
The place where Guru Nanak sat and performed the symbolic act of grinding corn became known as Gurdwara Chakki Sahib.
This sacred site commemorates his resilience and the profound impact of his teachings, which inspired even the mightiest ruler of the time to recognize the divine.
Preservation of History
While much of the original prison has been lost to time, a section of the cell where Guru Nanak was confined has been preserved. It stands as a testament to his enduring legacy and the miraculous events that unfolded there.
Gurdwara Chakki Sahib continues to attract devotees and visitors, serving as a beacon of faith and a reminder of Guru Nanak’s message of compassion, justice, and humility.
