History of Adiala Jail

Adiala Jail, officially known as Central Jail Rawalpindi, is one of Pakistan’s most prominent prisons, located in the Adiala area of Rawalpindi.

Established in 1986, the facility serves as a central prison for the Rawalpindi Division and is known for housing high-profile prisoners, including politicians, bureaucrats, military personnel, and terrorism suspects.

Originally designed to accommodate around 2,000 inmates, the prison often struggles with severe overcrowding, leading to challenging living conditions.

Despite offering facilities such as a medical care unit, vocational training center, library, and mosque, its rehabilitation programs are frequently criticized for their limited effectiveness.

Adiala Jail is heavily fortified, with stringent security measures and special arrangements for high-security prisoners.

It remains a focal point of media attention due to its association with political upheavals, corruption allegations, and reports of preferential treatment for influential inmates.

Despite its significant role in Pakistan’s prison system, Adiala continues to face challenges in managing overcrowding and upholding prisoner rights.

Imran Khan has been imprisoned in Adiala Jail for a year. The military-backed puppet government fears that PTI supporters may storm the jail to demand Imran Khan’s release.
