WhatsApp Ends Support for Older Phones in 2025
Users of iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus will need to upgrade their devices or install a newer iOS version.
WhatsApp will no longer be available on many older phone models starting January 1, 2025, due to advancements in technology.
According to a report by IOL, the messaging platform’s parent company, Meta, has decided to discontinue support for devices with outdated operating systems.
Affected Devices and Operating Systems
Android devices running KitKat (4.4) or earlier versions will lose access to WhatsApp. This change aligns with Meta’s goal to enhance security and improve app functionality.
Similarly, older iPhones running iOS 15.1 or lower must update their software by May 5, 2025, to continue using the app.
Users of iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus will need to upgrade their devices or install a newer iOS version.
Why Support Is Ending
WhatsApp’s continuous innovation—including encryption updates, multi-device compatibility, enhanced video calls, and AI-driven features—requires modern hardware and software.
Older devices lack the capacity to support these advancements, making it difficult to ensure user data security and maintain app functionality.
Furthermore, outdated phones are increasingly susceptible to cyber threats due to a lack of regular updates.
