India’s celebrated off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has announced his retirement from international cricket.

“I must say, I created a lot of memories alongside Rohit [Sharma] and several of my other teammates,” says the veteran cricketer.

India’s celebrated off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has announced his retirement from international cricket.

The announcement came on Wednesday, following the conclusion of the third Test against Australia, which ended in a draw.

Speaking to the media, the 38-year-old remarked: “This will be my last day as an Indian cricketer in all formats at the international level.”

Ashwin leaves behind an illustrious career, amassing 537 wickets in 106 Test matches—the second-highest tally by an Indian bowler, only behind Anil Kumble’s 619. Known for his sharp cricketing mind and ability to outfox batsmen, Ashwin’s contributions extended beyond just bowling.

He also developed into a capable all-rounder, scoring six Test centuries.

Ashwin experienced mixed fortunes in his final series, making a return for the day-night Test in Adelaide and claiming one wicket after missing the series-opener in Perth.

However, that match turned out to be his last in an Indian jersey as he was omitted from the playing XI for Brisbane. Reflecting on his decision, Ashwin shared: “I do feel there’s a bit of punch left in meas a cricketer, but I would like to […] showcase that in club-level cricket.”

He expressed gratitude for the camaraderie he experienced during his career, adding: “I had a lot of fun. I must say, I created a lot of memories alongside Rohit [Sharma] and several of my other teammates.” Ashwin made these heartfelt comments while sitting alongside India’s captain, Rohit Sharma.

Beyond Tests, Ashwin had a significant impact in white-ball cricket as well. He represented India in 116 ODIs and 65 T20 Internationals, finishing with an impressive total of 765 wickets across all formats.

Known as a match-winner on India’s spin-friendly tracks, Ashwin leaves behind a legacy of skill, resilience, and passion for the game.

His retirement marks the end of an era for Indian cricket, but fans can look forward to seeing his continued involvement in the sport at the club level.
