LHC Implements Stricter Smog Control Measures for Schools
The hearing was adjourned until Tuesday for further deliberations on citizen-filed petitions.
In a bid to combat rising smog levels, the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday issued new directives requiring schools to provide pick-and-drop services for students after the winter break.
Justice Shahid Karim of the LHC issued these orders during a hearing on petitions aimed at smog prevention.
The court emphasized that schools must take responsibility for students’ transportation, warning that non-compliance would result in the sealing of institutions.
Furthermore, the court barred schools from issuing disclaimers to absolve themselves of this responsibility.
Justice Karim also directed the transport authorities to draft a comprehensive vehicle fitness policy within 15 days.
The policy mandates quarterly inspections for all vehicles, with fitness certificates issued by the transport department.
The transport department will maintain a centralized database of both public and private buses to ensure compliance.
The hearing was adjourned until Tuesday for further deliberations on citizen-filed petitions.
Outdoor Activities Resume Amid Improved Air Quality
In related news, the Punjab government has lifted restrictions on outdoor activities following a drop in smog levels across the province.
Parks, zoos, playgrounds, museums, and other recreational sites are now open, along with the resumption of outdoor sports, exhibitions, and festivals.
A notification issued by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that all outdoor activities and commercial operations, including markets and shopping plazas, can continue until 8:00 PM from November 22, 2024.
These steps reflect the dual approach of tightening measures against pollution sources while gradually restoring normalcy as air quality improves.
